After a long 13-hour flight from San Francisco, CA, I reached my destination; Taipei, Taiwan ("The Heart of Asia"). I had no idea what Taiwan had to offer, except for layovers when I traveled in the past. I stayed at Fun Taipei @ Shilin Night Market hostel for $13/night. Right below the hostel is the hustle and bustle of the popular Shilin Night Market - an abundance of night markets are in Taiwan, which I hope to visit and write about in the future.
For the sake of this post, I want to focus on Shilin Night Market. This is one of the most popular night markets in Taiwan. It has a mixture of food, typical carnival games, and random stores (that sells things like clothes or random stuff you never thought you needed). Shilin Night Market is known for their Giant Fried Chicken Steak, which tastes exactly like popcorn chicken, but BIGGER! This is a staple that I would recommend to anyone.
As I walked through the alleys and vendors, it was easy to get lost in this maze. Taiwan is very clean and I soon learned that they are serious when it comes to recycling. But it was so frustrating that I could not find a single garbage container. I thought to myself: How can Taiwan be so clean, when there were no garbage containers in sight?
Stinky Tofu is another "recommended" dish, but I won't be trying this dish anytime soon because of the smell. It is a very distinct smell and if you are anything like me; if something exudes a certain smell, I probably won't eat it. Shilin Night Market has other "weird" food such as a penis shaped dessert, candy covered tomatoes, intestines, and heart on a stick. Nevertheless, it was a great introduction of Taiwan.
